Obituary for Winfred "Fred" Holdcraft

Abundant love, laughter, respect and heartfelt sadness accompanied our most treasured patriarch, Winfred (Fred) Holdcraft as he passed away on August 16, 2024. Services will be held at Burgess Funeral Home in LaSalle on August 21. The visitation will be 11am-1:30pm, followed by a brief funeral service. Burial and graveside services with full military rites provided b the LaSalle/Oglesby Veteran's Memorial Group will be at Spring Valley Memorial Cemetery immediately after. Fellowship will be at the American Legion, Oglesby for all who care to gather with us and share memories after the graveside services. Winfred was born June 5, 1937 to Everett and Olga (Burnell) Holdcraft in Washington, IL. The family later moved to the small town of Utica and that became the family home. Winfred belonged to the generation of able-bodied men who knew it was their duty to "do their service". He chose the Marine Corps. He proudly served from 1954-1958. Winfred married Carla Miller on December 31, 1960. He married Linda Lance Snell on Feb. 2, 1980. Winfred was a lifetime member of Local 150 Operating Engineers. He could operate any type of heavy machinery and was a master as a crane operator. He told his children and family members he built every road and bridge we traveled on. Part of that was correct. He loved peach pie and vanilla ice cream. He was a tough man with strong convictions, yet gentle and caring with all the "little ones" in the family. He loved country music, and he loved to dance with his wife Linda. Watching them dance together made so many people smile. He was a hunter for many years, coming home from one Canada trip with a moose. He and his wife rode a Gold Wing Honda motorcycle for many years in their travels. In most recent years they became RV people and camped as they traveled around the country. They made new friends everywhere they went. Winfred's beloved grandsons Zachary & Cole Holdcraft have been afforded the honor of serving as pallbearers along with nephews Ronald Holdcraft, Dale Holdcraft, Terry Tunget, and Robert Baker, Jr. Honorary pallbearers are granddaughter Brooke Gramer, the gifted, skilled nurse who has helped us so much and Alana Holdcraft, our family athlete who qualified and dedicated her race in the US Marine Corp Marathon to her grandpa. Winfred is survived by his wife Linda, and children Penny (the late Michael) Decker, Danny (Tammy) Holdcraft, Corey (Theresa Rose) Holdcraft, Kimberly (Charles) Hillison, Rich (Sue) Snell, Sandra (Lee) Gramer, and brother Randy (Linda) Holdcraft. Surviving also are grandchildren Myndee, Alana, Zachary, Cole, Jacob, Joshua, Jennifer, Brooke, Allison, Thomas, Jessica, Aubrey, Kyle, Kristofer, Cameron, Clinton, Elijah, Crystal, many nieces, nephews &14 great grandchildren. Winfred was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Stacey, Otis, Herschel, Marvin & sister Jean who are greatly missed. On line condolences may be expressed at www.burgessfh.com
