Walter Howard McLachlan, 88, of LaSalle peacefully died at 12:20 AM. on Friday, November 10, 2023 under the caring staff of St Elizabeth's Hospital Ottawa with his son Br. Luke at his side.
Visitation will be held at St Hyacinth’s church of LaSalle on Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Fr. Antonio Dittmer of St Mary’s Parish of Moline will preside over the Funeral Mass at 11:00 A.M. Burial will follow at St. Hyacinth Cemetery. Full military rites will be accorded by the LaSalle/Oglesby Veterans Memorial Group. Arrangements made possible by Burgess Funeral Home of LaSalle.
Howard was born August 25, 1935, in Ottawa to Walter ‘Buck’ and Olga (Ostrem)
McLachlan. He grew up on his family farm near Praire Center, attended Serena high school, and proudly served in the United States Navy, 1953 to 1957.
In 1959 on August 8, Howard and his long-time childhood friend, Don Donahue, married the Brinovec sisters of LaSalle, Rose and Shirley respectively at St Hyacinth’s church.
Howard worked at various jobs: Alpha Cement, Swift meat packing plant Rochelle, Phillips -Joanna, Libby Owens, and lastly thirty years as forklift operator and maintenance oiler at J&L and then LTV Steel Hennepin retiring in 1999.
He was a St Hyacinth’s parishioner and Mass server, belonged to St Steven’s society, the Cedar Point Sportsman club, and the Better Fishing association. He was an avid White Sox fan, enjoyed gardening, camping, canoeing, biking, hunting, fishing, attending the Civil War round table sessions.
He is survived by his wife, Rose of LaSalle; his son Br. Luke, of St. Bede; his favorite daughter Theresa of LaSalle; nieces and nephews: Anne, Donna, Lois, Lori, Kathleen, Paul, Michael, Jeffrey, Steven, Mark, and Greg.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Lucille McLachlan and Mildred Mussatto, his niece Linda Royers.
Pall bearers will be Paul Mussatto, Luke McLachlan, Greg Donahue, Jay Mulligan, Ray Sandrolini, Patrick Shea.
