Obituary for John G. Yerly
John G. (Grandpa Fish n Fun) Yerly 85 of LaSalle passed away peacefully on August 28 at home with his family at his side. He fought a long battle with cancer. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial mass will be Saturday September 4 at 11 in St. Hyacinth Church. Reverend Paul Carlson pastor of Holy Family Church in Oglesby will officiate. A memorial visitation will be in the church Saturday from 9 to the time of services. The Burgess Funeral Home in La Salle is handling the arrangements.
He was born on May 25, 1936 at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley to Sebastan and Rose (Braida) Yerly.
He served his country through the branch of the Army from 1955 to 1957.
John and Mary met in 1987 and married in February 1991 in Putnam County Courthouse
He was a carpenter by trade through out the years. He owned and operated Yerly Construction with his brother Paul (LeRoy) Yerly. The Company sponsor several youth activities. He was a member of the Carpenter’s Union local 195. John and Mary owned and operated Mary’s Diner in McNabb from 1990-2000.
He was a member of St. Patrick Church in LaSalle. He was a member of the Spring Valley Boat Club for 25 years. He belonged to Fish n Fun for 35 years. For several of those years he was on the board of directors. He cherished all the time he could be with family and friends. His family and grandchildren dubbed him the title of “Grandpa Fish n Fun” in which he loved dearly.
He is survived by: his wife
4 Sons: Don (Tammi) Yerly, Andy Yerly, Thomas (Sherylynn) Yerly, and Darren (Julee) Nawa
2 Daughters: Kim (Jeff) Filipiak, and Shelly (Mike) Waite
1 brother and 6 sisters. 17 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by 10 siblings.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family for his favorite charities.
