Obituary for James "Al" Smith

James Alec “Al” Smith, 76, passed away peacefully at his home in Utica, he is formerly of Bloomington, IL. , on January 3, 2025, after a brief illness. Born in Bloomington, IL, on July 17, 1948, Al was the beloved son of the late Franklin “Hank” Smith and Mary Louise “Lou” (née Alexander) Smith. Al graduated from Normal Community High School in 1966 and went on to earn his degree from Illinois State University. He spent much of his life as a dedicated realtor in the Bloomington-Normal area, building connections and serving his community with care. In his retirement over a decade ago, Al followed his passion for nature to Utica, IL, just a stone’s throw from Starved Rock State Park. There, he embraced a quiet and fulfilling life surrounded by the beauty of the woods. Rarely a day went by that he didn’t hike the park’s trails or unwind at the Lodge, a place that brought him immense peace and joy. Al was a man of quiet strength and thoughtful introspection, expressing his love and generosity in subtle but deeply meaningful ways. He poured countless hours into researching his family’s roots, leaving a lasting legacy of genealogical history. A lifelong learner, Al explored religions and philosophies with an open mind and a quest for understanding. His simple and reflective lifestyle was a testament to the beauty he found in life’s small moments. Above all, Al was a devoted father to his daughter Sasha (Daniel) Ostrozovich of Chicago and the proud grandfather of Rosamund, his cherished “Rosie Posy.” He was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson, Owen Ostrozovich, whom he often dreamed of and held close to his heart. Al’s family and friends will forever miss his quiet wisdom, gentle presence, and the love he gave so generously in his own way. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. At Al’s request, a private family gathering will be held to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to be made in his honor to the Starved Rock Foundation, an organization that supports the preservation of the natural beauty he so deeply cherished.
