Obituary for Gilbert Brate
Gilbert Brate 90 of La Salle passed away Friday September 29 at 9:05PM in The Illinois Veteran’s Home in La Salle. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial mass will be Thursday October 12 in St. Valentine’s Church in Peru at 11. Father Jacob Rose Pastor of Peru Catholic Parishes will officiate. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in La Salle. The La Salle/ Oglesby Veterans Memorial Group will conduct a flag folding ceremony. A memorial visitation will be in the church from 10 until the time of services. The Burgess Funeral Home in La Salle is handling the arrangements.
Gil was born on November 13, 1926. Was a loving husband, a good son to his parents, a caring brother to his siblings, a wonderful dad to his children, and a kind human being to everyone who crossed his path. He went to LP High School where he excelled at sports. He started his freshman year in basketball. He was drafted his senior year of high school into the army and served in Italy during World War II. Upon completing his service he came back to La Salle and finished his GED.
In 1951 he married the love of his life, Angela Sczepaniak. They raised four children Philip, (Patricia Warehan), David (Dee Kerr), Patti, (Tim Farmer) and Tom, (Tracey White).
He worked at Carus Chemical for 43 years. Gil liked taking pictures, watching sports, fixing things, and reading. He was a very handy person to know. He knew plumbing, carpentry, electrical, and built the two houses that his family lived in.
He had a sister, Mille, and a brother Artie. He had seven grandchildren: Tom and Keeley Farmer, Carrie, Kyle, and Cameron Brate, Angela and Chrystal Brate. Gil also had one great grandchild, Aiden Brate
He is preceded in death by his wife Angie. Gil and Angie were very happy together until she passed away. He will be remembered for being a man that always put others before himself.
