Floyd “Lou” Groene, 91, of Ladd passed away peacefully Jan. 8, 2016.

A Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary’s Church, Utica with Monsignor James Swaner officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be 9-10 a.m. Thursday in the church. Burgess Funeral Home, La Salle is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mr. Groene was born on July 12, 1924, in Streator to Anthony and Irma Groene. Lou, as he was known by his family and friends, served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, fighting bravely on Omaha Beach.
He returned to Illinois, teaching at Malden where he was a coach, principal and bus driver.

Lou’s gentle, kind nature will be missed. He volunteered for numerous church activities as well as spending many hours volunteering at soup kitchens. His stepdaughter Maggie Thacker said Lou was at peace with passing and looking forward to being with his beloved wife Joan Heath, whom he married on June 23, 1973.

Survivors include two stepdaughters, Margaret (Robert) Thacker of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Madelyn (Kurt) Estwing of Rockford; and one sister, Lorraine Coleman of Mainville, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his wife; five brothers and one sister.
