Daniel (Dan) R. Munson, 69, beloved father, husband, brother and uncle passed away on February 2, 2026. He was born in Ottawa, IL to the late Clarence and Wanda (née DeMoss) Munson (step-father James Grotti).
Everyone who knew Dan knew him to be incredibly easygoing, reliable, and deeply rooted in family values. An avid sports fan, Dan loved to cheer on the Miami Dolphins and the fighting Illini. He was an accomplished wrestler in high school and a proud member of the OHS Glutton Club.
After nearly 30 years of dedicated service, Dan happily retired from IDOT Highway Maintenance. In retirement, he generously gave his time volunteering at the local food pantry, driving for MASS, and faithfully attending Friday night Pistol Shrimp games. He was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Ottawa and also attended services at Waltham Presbyterian Church.
One of Dan’s greatest joys was spent watching the sun set over Lake Mills by the campfire and surrounded by those he loved most.
Dan is survived by his wife of 29 years, Lori (née Rieuf) Munson; his sons, Erik (wife Mallory) and Nathaniel (Nat); his daughter, Johanna (Jo); his sister, Debbie (husband Tony) Dixon; his sister-in-law, Lorene Munson; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Dale; and his first wife, Lou Claire Kostello.
A visitation to celebrate his life will be held Thursday, February 12 at the Burgess Funeral Home in LaSalle from 4 to 6 with a memorial service to follow.
