Mrs. Bernadine Cahill, 93, of Utica, passed away at 11:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Illinois Valley Community Hospital. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at St. Mary's Church in Utica with Monsignor James Swaner officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burgess Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. She was born March 4, 1920, in Utica, to Charles and Cecelia (Baker) Sykes. She married Donald 'DJ' Cahill on June 15, 1946, at St. Mary's Church in Utica. Bernadine was a former telephone operator in Utica and a homemaker and was active with St. Mary's Catholic School and Holy Family School in Oglesby. Mrs. Cahill was a member of St. Mary's Church and the Altar & Rosary Society for many years. She is survived by one daughter, Cathy (Rick) Rosen, of Chicago; four grandchildren, Brendan (Ann) Foley, Mike (Shannon) Foley, Jennifer (Nick) Dinham and Matthew Rosen. Bernie was blessed with eight great-grandchildren, her 'Pride and Joy,' and several nieces and nephews. Bernie lived in Utica her entire life. Her parents and DJ had family in town for more than 100 years. She was proud of and loved this 'Little Town,' a community where neighbors and friends watched over her as she did them. Bernie was beloved by her family and many friends from all walks of life. She was known for her generosity, kindness and her good deeds were legendary. She welcomed everyone to her home and heart. No one left her presence without feeling better, without a smile on their face and a more positive, gentle view of humanity. Bernadine was a living witness to her faith in God and God's will. She was known for her keen sense of humor, slow to judge and quick to forgive, she was a testament to unconditional love. Bernie inspired her family and friends to always be thankful for their blessings and ever-mindfull of all those less fortunate. She will be dearly missed by her family and the many friends whose lives she touched with grace and love. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Utica Ambulance Service, St. Mary's Church or a veterans group of choice.
