Obituary for Ann (Manley) Jansen
On the evening of January 24, 2023, Ann (Manley) Jansen, 88, of Oglesby went home to be with her Lord and Savior. She was surrounded by her loving family.
As the youngest of nine children, Ann was born to William and Margaret (Farmer) Manley of Utica on August 19, 1934. She attended St. Mary’s Parochial School in Utica and was a graduate of LaSalle Peru High School. She went on to continue her education at Illinois Valley Community College.
In 1955 she married Donald R. Jansen of Ottawa and had four children: Margaret Martyn of Ottawa, Julie (Scott) Toellen of Geneva, Joseph Jansen of Utica, and Jay Jansen of Oglesby.
In the early years of her marriage, she chose to stay home to raise her children. Following the death of her husband in 1972, she began a career with the PQ Corporation in Utica as a Customer Service Representative where she would remain for nearly 40 years. She loved to travel and attend Broadway plays, concerts and musicals, and could be ready for any new adventure at a moment’s notice. She enjoyed spending time with family and adored her grandchildren beyond measure, but her greatest joy came with all her new great grandbabies which we are certain extended her life by years just so she could meet them.
Ann was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two sisters, Marie Waters and Rose Swanson, her five brothers, Joe, Ambrose, William, Paul, and James Manley, and her longtime partner, Gerald Severson.
Surviving are her children, grandchildren: Brian Martyn, Dr. Colin (Karen) Martyn, Michael (Christine) Toellen, Leanne (Matt) Fernandes, David Toellen, Alec Jansen, and Joseph G. Jansen, and her great grandchildren: Luke and Noah Fernandes, Ella Marie Toellen, and Benjamin Martyn.
She is also survived by her beloved sister, Rita Eschbach of Ottawa, and several nieces and nephews.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Church of Utica.
Ann had a great sense of humor and her wittiness always kept everyone around her entertained. She was also very quick to lend an ear and offer her advice to her children. The conversation typically ended with her famous quote, “Do what you want, you will anyway”. Her feisty, sassy and irreplaceable soul will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be distributed to some of Ann’s favorite charities.
